SOW INDOORS – APRIL to JUNE
SOW OUTDOORS – MAY to JUNE
HARVEST – JULY to OCTOBER
PLANTING SEEDS
To get a head-start, plant indoors or under glass from April, fill a seed tray with slightly dampened seed sowing compost nearly to the top. Sow seeds on their edge over the surface and lightly cover with seed compost (approx 1/2 inch deep). Place in a light space in warmth of 20°C (68°F) until germination takes place. Sow outdoors mid-May to June direct into growing site 1.5cm (1/2″) deep 2 to 3 seeds in each position 60cm (24″) apart.
POTTING OUT
When seedlings are large enough to handle (when they develop their first pair of rough leaves), they’re ready to be transplanted to their growing site in late May to early June 60cm apart. Greenhouse sowings should be gradually hardened off outside before transplanting. Outdoor sowings should be thinned out according to the measurements above.
HINT
You can pick these when they’re small and use like courgettes in cooking.
