Description

SOW INDOORS – APRIL to MAY

SOW OUTDOORS – MID-MAY to JULY

HARVEST – JULY to OCTOBER

For a head start, sow indoors initially. Fill a seed tray with seed sowing compost nearly to the top. Sprinkle seeds over the surface and cover with seed compost (approx 1/2 inch deep). Place in a light, warm space in 15-25°C (59-77°F) and keep moist. Germination takes 10-14 days. Make sure there is plenty of light and drainage for the pots.

When seedlings are large enough to handle (between 2-4cm usually), they’re ready to be transferred into larger pots (8cm) or trays and grow. Grow on in cooler conditions and ensure there’s some fertiliser in the pots or directly in the ground before transplanting. When danger of frost has passed, gradually harden off when planting outdoors to a well drained, sunny position.

If possible, keep the beans under cover in a greenhouse / conservatory but if not possible maintain in a sunny position. Space 25cm apart when in their final position outside. You may need to provide a support for the plants. Regularly pick the beans to ensure constant regrowth.
