Description
SOW OUTDOORS – APRIL and MAY, JUNE/JULY (when forcing)
HARVESTS – AUGUST to NOVEMBER
Sow directly outdoors where they are to grow from May to July. Requires plenty of compost and a fertiliser added in a few days before sowing. Sow at a depth of 1.5-2cm into well prepared, raked moist soil in a sunny or semi shade site. Rows should be about 25cm apart, with 20cm between plants. Germination takes 7-21 days. Once the seedlings emerge, thin out seedlings as necessary and cover with a protective netting or fleece.
For summer ‘forced’ sowings (June/July), trim the top growth leaving 2cm above ground. Then cover plant with a device or container which will completely block out the light. Trim heads in autumn. After trimming darkness is required for chicon formation. Keep soil moist. They prefer a temperature of 10-15°C. The chicons are ready to harvest when 15cm high approx which takes about 3-4 weeks from the start of forcing. To remove the chicon, simply cut away just above the crown, this will allow a second chicon to form.
