Description
SOW INDOORS – FEBRUARY to MAY
PLANT OUT – APRIL to JUNE
FLOWERS – JULY to OCTOBER
From Feb – May sow indoors, fill a seed tray with seed sowing compost nearly to the top. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover with seed compost (approx 0.5cm or 1/4 inch deep). Place in a light space in warmth of 18-20°C (65-68°F) and keep moist. Germination usually takes 10-14 days. Protect from slugs and snails.
When seedlings are large enough to handle (between 2-4cm usually), they’re ready to be transferred into larger 7.5cm pots. Always handle by the leaf not the stem. Gradually harden 30cm between plants. Deadhead flowers to prolong flowering period.
TIP: Dahlias wouldn’t survive throughout the winter frosts, but in October/November, you can pull up the tubers that they produce and save them to plant the following year. Remove all excess soil, and store in a dry, covered area.
