SOW INDOORS – APRIL to MAY

SOW OUTDOORS – MAY

HARVEST – SEPTEMBER to NOVEMBER

To get a head-start, plant indoors or under glass from April, fill 9cm pots with slightly dampened seed sowing compost nearly to the top. Sow seeds vertically over the surface and cover with seed compost (approx 2cm deep). Place in a light space in warmth of 20°C (68°F) until germination takes place. Sow outdoors in May direct into growing site 2cm deep and 60cm (24″) apart.

When seedlings are large enough to handle (5-6 leaves), they’re ready to be transplanted to their growing site in late May to early June 60cm apart. Greenhouse sowings should be gradually hardened off outside before transplanting. Outdoor sowings should be thinned out according to the measurements above.

They are heavy feeders, and prefer soil dug in with manure or well-rotted compost. Do not disturb the roots in transplanting.
