Description
SOW UNDER COVER – FEBRUARY to APRIL
PLANT OUTDOORS – MAY to JUNE
HARVEST – JUNE to SEPTEMBER
For a head start, sow indoors or under cover in a greenhouse. Fill a seed tray or small pots with seed sowing compost nearly to the top. Sprinkle seeds over the surface and very lightly cover with seed compost (1/4 inch deep). Place in a propagator. If you don’t have one, wrap in cling film instead in a light, space in 15-20C and keep moist (but not wet). Germination takes 7-14 days.
When seedlings are large enough to handle (between 2-4cm usually), they’re ready to be transferred into larger pots (8cm). Grow on in cooler conditions. When danger of frost has passed, gradually harden off when planting outdoors to a well drained, sunny position spaced 45cm apart.Tomato plants are very thirsty, so require watering daily. Feed with some tomato fertiliser once a week.
