Description

SOW – MARCH to JULY

HARVEST – JULY to OCTOBER

For a head start, sow indoors initially. Fill a seed tray with seed sowing compost nearly to the top. Sprinkle the seeds over the surface and cover with a thin sprinkling of seed compost (approx 2cm deep). Each cluster will produce 3-5 seedlings, so you will need to reduce these to one healthy plant. Place in a light, warm space in 15-25°C (59-77°F). Make sure there is plenty of light and drainage for the pots. Germination takes place in usually 5-7 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle (between 2-4cm usually), they’re ready to be transferred into larger pots (8cm). Grow on in cooler conditions. When danger of frost has passed, gradually harden off when planting outdoors to a well drained, sunny position.

Sow directly outdoors where they are to grow from April to July. Sow at a depth of 2cm into well prepared, raked soil. Once the seedlings emerge, thin out seedlings as necessary to allow 20-30cm spacing. Swiss chard will also grow well in containers. Keep well watered.
