MARCH – APRIL – SOW

APRIL – SEPTEMBER – PLANT OUT AND HARVEST

PLANTING SEEDS

In early spring, fill a seed tray with seed sowing compost nearly to the top. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover with seed compost (approx 1/4 inch deep). For a head start, sow indoors initially. Place in a light space in warmth of 15-25°C (60-70°F) and keep moist.

POTTING OUT

When seedlings are large enough to handle (between 2-4cm usually), they’re ready to be transferred into larger pots. Transplant 6 inches apart into well-drained trays of potting compost or small pots.

PLANTING OUT

Once the plants have filled a container, transplant into a larger one, or place directly outdoors once the threat of frost has passed. Keep the plants consistently watered but ensure they don’t get too wet.

Cut the flowers off later in the season to ensure the plant doesn’t spread. Chives will die off In early Autumn, so you can cut them back after this.

Chives like to be divided every 3 to 4 years in the spring. They become more productive this way.
