Bamboo socks and underwear have been growing in popularity in recent years and the first thing that usually comes out of the wearer’s mouth is: ‘they’re so soft.’ It’s true – bamboo makes the most beautifully soft fabric that you can’t help but enjoy having next to your skin.
So why only treat your feet to it? We spend half our lives in bed, so why don’t we pay more attention to what we’re sleeping on? We spoke to Alice from Sloth London to find out more about how SLOTH sheets are the best sustainable alternative to traditional bedlinen.
What inspired you to create your brand? How did the business start?
I used to work in luxury homeware, and was shocked at how expensive good quality bed linen was. Around this time I was also introduced to an organic cotton brand who explained to me the damage of the cotton industry to the environment. Appalled by the effects of mass produced cotton, I started reading around alternative solutions, and learned that bamboo was much kinder to the planet. From the moment the first sample from our manufacturer arrived, I couldn’t believe how incredibly soft and breathable the sheets felt, and knew this was the material I wanted to work with. From there, I worked to create the SLOTH brand and have prioritised making the most environmentally conscious choices possible.
What makes your products special? What is the thing that separates you from your competitors?
The bamboo bed linen available in the UK is often extremely plain and without personality. I’ve always been a fan of a crisp white sheet, but it was important to me to add a little extra something to give them a luxury feeling. The piping round the edges of the pillowcases and duvet cover lets you play around with a pop of colour, without ruining the aesthetic of fresh white sheets.
What about your products is sustainable and plastic free? How and what have you changed or altered to make the products zero plastic, zero waste or sustainable?
Bamboo uses just 10% of the water required to grow and manufacture cotton, which has a huge impact on the ecosystems and people in the surrounding areas. Equally, bamboo is such a fast-growing and robust plant that it doesn’t require the pesticides and fertilizers needed to grow cotton, which means that harmful chemicals aren’t released into the environment. Your SLOTH sheets will be posted to you in plastic free, recycled and recyclable packaging and, where possible, we deliver London orders by bike.
What is your best seller or favourite product in your line?
Our grey bed linen set is the most popular in the range, but I’m in love with our peach piping – it’s such an easy way to make a space feel more feminine, without becoming overpowering or sickly.
